6 months after the spill

By Student PIRGs

It’s been six months since the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killed 11 men and led to the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Offshore drilling is a risky and dangerous. That's why we are calling on President Obama to halt plans for new offshore drilling.

For nearly 90 days BP tried everything scientists could think of to stop the oil - from a cap over the gusher to forcing heavy mud into it to literally throwing garbage into it.

But despite their efforts, around 200 million gallons of oil - about 11 times more oil than the Exxon-Valdez spill - flowed into the Gulf.

As the tragedy unfolded more than 600 miles of coast were hit with oil, thousands of birds and sea turtles died, and tens of thousands of fishermen and tourism workers were put out of work because of the damage.

This disaster has not gone away, but we can prevent another like it from happening. It’s pretty simple really: no drills, no spills.
