For decades, students have been at the forefront of social change and activist movements, responding to the pressing issues of the day with energy, passion, and the core belief that they can make a difference. We’re excited to share the incredible work and many victories our team of student leaders accomplished over the last year!
Annual Report Highlights

People Power
During the 2021-2022 academic year, more than 3,300 students got involved with our program on 125 campuses across the country. Students took over 110,000 campaign actions to fight for a shared vision of a better future.

Civic Engagement
New Data from Tufts University showed that college campuses with an established PIRG club or chapter in fall of 2020 turned out at 6 percentage points higher than the national average. That means 89,000 more young voters!

Fighting Climate Change
We won our six year long campaign to get UMass Amherst committed to 100 percent renewable energy by 2023, and won a number of legislative victories to build a renewable-powered future in states such as California, Connecticut, and Maryland.

Making Textbooks Affordable
We won $14 million in federal funding for free open textbooks on campuses across the country, as part of a program that we helped launch in 2018 which has already saved students more than $220 million.
In addition, we met with over 1,500 faculty about textbooks affordability, and held award shows to recognize faculty using open textbooks.
