Florida PIRG Students work with professional staff at colleges and universities across Florida to make sure our peers have the skills, opportunities and training they need to create a better, more sustainable future for all of us.

You may know us from our New Voters Project, our non-partisan youth voter mobilization effort to help first-time voters have the tools they need to get registered and turn out to vote. Just last fall, we trained more than 200 volunteers, helped to register 9,000 young people to vote, and engaged more than 15,000 students. We co-hosted two Florida student voter summits at UCF and FIU with Campus Vote Project and participated in Michelle Obama’s ‘When We All Vote’ week of action — and she highlighted our Florida work with a retweet! Our Get-Out-The-Vote campaign held 20 parties at the polls and helped to increase turnout from the 2014 midterms on many of the campuses where we organized: at University of South Florida we saw a 289% increase, and at Florida State University saw a 198% increase.

This year we’re working on over a dozen campuses across the state to phase out single use plastics, help campuses commit to 100% renewable energy and help register thousands of young people to vote.

Our Leaders

Alex Gordon // Break Free From Plastics Campaign Coordinator

My name is Alex Gordon and I am a Sophomore at Eckerd College majoring in Political Science and Environmental Studies. I decided to get involved with PIRG because I believe in the power of student run grassroots organizing! This year, I am most excited to work toward creating a campus that is free of most single-use plastics.

Jake Rider // Recruitment Coordinator

My name is Jake Rider, a sophomore at Eckerd College, majoring in Environmental Studies and Anthropology with a minor in Political Science. I am involved with Florida PIRG Students because I find the voices of young people are not being adequately represented and PIRG creates a platform to change this by allowing young people to project their voices and make tangible change. For this year, I am most excited to register the incoming first-year class to vote in their new second home state of Florida.

Carrie Walker // Secretary

I’m Carrie and I’m a 2nd year International Relations and Global Affairs major at Eckerd College. I became involved in Florida PIRG Students through the New Voters Project and helped register, inform, and transport student voters. I’m very excited to utilize my role as Secretary to become more deeply involved in all of the Florida PIRG Students campaigns this year.

Arielle Mizrahi  //  Field Organizer

Arielle is our Campus Organizer working with student leaders at Eckerd College and other campuses across Florida. She graduated from Rutgers-New Brunswick in 2017 with a degree in sociology, organized with PIRG students in Connecticut and New Jersey before moving to Florida to work with Florida PIRG Students!

Dan Xie  //  Political Director

Dan directs the national political strategy and grant fundraising for the Student PIRGs. Dan has managed successful campaigns from coast to coast to cap global warming pollution, fight the high cost of higher education, and make voting more accessible for students. She has recruited and trained hundreds of students and staff on public interest campaigns and got her start as an intern with CALPIRG Students. Dan lives in St. Petersburg, Fla., where she is an avid cyclist and climber.
