Why should you work with Student PIRGs?

To build the brighter future we all want, we’ll have to address some big challenges: From climate change and the plastic waste crisis, to threats to our democracy and the destruction of the natural world. Students have the greatest stake in solving these problems, and the passion and idealism to create the future we want. We’re hiring Campus Organizers to help students make the changes we need.

But how do you know if a job with the Student PIRGs is right for you? Here are 10 reasons:

  1. You recognize that students have the power, potential and motivation to reshape our future.

  2. You’re excited to take on issues that affect everybody, not just students. From transitioning our country away from polluting fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy, to tackling the plastic waste crisis, to increasing voter participation so we have a truly representative, and vibrant democracy.

  3. You want to focus Americans’ attention on the issues that affect the quality of our environment and our lives, and get them to pay less attention to the quantity of “stuff” people have and whether that’s fair or not.

  4. You believe in open dialogue. When someone doesn’t agree with us, a campus organizer works to find common ground, and then tries to recruit them to our point of view. Organizers won’t call someone out who disagrees with them. They call them in. And an organizer is open-minded about what those who disagree with us have to say.

  5. You recognize that for students to make an impact they will need skills and strategies they aren’t getting in today’s classrooms. As a campus organizer you’d be giving students the tools and training necessary to make the most of those opportunities, and the opportunities to make a real difference on the issues they care about.

  6. You’re excited to do the real work it takes to make change. As a campus organizer you’ll help build public support to get decision makers to do the right thing, train and develop new student leaders, and build the student power and resources it takes to sustain an organization for the long haul.

  7. You want to realize your potential, and help others do the same. You want to give your all to something bigger than yourself, and to identify and find other students who feel the same way.

  8. You’re ready to work hard. For campus organizers there’s always one more person to talk to, one more text to send, one more signature to gather. Organizers lead by example, helping students step out of their comfort zone so they can become effective activists and leaders. We train our organizers well, but we expect you to be self-starting, capable of working independently.

  9. You like the idea that your work would be funded by small individual contributions, rather than a few wealthy donors. Most of our funding comes from students, who make small contributions via fees at their campuses. As a campus organizer you’d strive to achieve the most change possible for each dollar contributed. And you understand that non-profit work doesn’t entitle you to for-profit pay.

  10. You believe in merit, and so do we. The more you deliver, the more responsibility you take on, and the longer you stay, then the more say we will give you in what we do and how we do it.
