As part of a nationwide network of student and consumer advocacy organizations, the Student PIRGs have worked for nearly 50 years to amplify the power of student activism. Our Higher Education Project was launched in 1994 on the premise that affordable, accessible higher education is critical for our nation’s future.
According to the College Board, the average undergraduate student should budget between $1,200 and $1,300 for textbooks and supplies each year. That’s as much as 40% of tuition at a two-year community college and 13% at a four-year public institution. For many students and families already struggling to afford a college degree, that is simply too much – meaning more debt, working longer hours, or making choices that undermine academic success.
For more than a decade, the Student PIRGS have led the way in exposing publisher’s practices that rip off students, championing cost-saving textbook options like used books and rental programs, and advocating for open textbooks as a long-term solution. We can save students a ton of money, and put the heat on publishers to make textbooks affordable.
We are hiring a campaign organizer who is willing to work hard to advocate for the students on college campuses across the country. As a campaign organizer with the Student PIRGs you will help develop campaigns, build coalitions, mobilize and organize the public, showcase our work online and in the media, and make our case directly to decision-makers in order to make textbooks more affordable.

- Organizing our student leaders and staff around the country to build grassroots power

- Conducting research to demonstrate the urgency and impact of higher education issues
- Working with the media to generate broad public support and pressure for our campaigns
- Recruiting and building relationships with coalition partners in DC and around the country
