An update from the Student PIRGs

Press Release

On Wednesday, the COVID-19 virus was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

We are taking recommendations from college and university leaders and public health experts and taking proactive steps to mitigate the potential impact of COVID-19 in our campus and off-campus communities. This includes canceling all in-person events and activities for the foreseeable future and requiring staff to work from home. We are encouraging everyone to practice social distancing to protect not only yourself, but the people around you.

But that doesn’t mean we need to stop our important work to protect the environment, mitigate hunger, and promote civic engagement. We started off the year strong and we can keep working to make the world a better place, even if we need to do it differently for a while.

We know that climate change, the upcoming 2020 election, and the high cost textbooks will all still be here once this all passes. So we’re currently working to update our campaign plans to incorporate more digital and phonebanking actions and continue chapter and campaign meetings across the country through online-conferencing.

We will continue to provide updates to any changes in protocol as well as any rescheduling of future events as necessary.

We’re also keeping an eye on those that might try to take advantage of this public health crisis by putting out misinformation or price gouging consumers. You can check out our top 5 tips to avoid price gouging on Amazon.

If you have ideas for ways we can make an impact on issues related to the virus we should undertake, please don’t hesitate to let us know by emailing [email protected]

We know we are entering uncharted waters as our communities transition to remote classes and take measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. But we also know our generation has the energy and innovation to keep up the work for a better world.
